is elsewhere is john brennan. >> reporter: i think that that's right. there's no doubt about that. this certainly gives him a little bit of time and space after, you know, scrutiny being on him. but, again, i think that, you know, this is big news today, that schumer came out and said that he is going to support hagel moving forward. i think a lot of eyes were sort of waiting for this decision, watching to see what would happen, and you're right, gives john brennan a little bit more room moving forward. >> kristin welker, as ever, thank you so much. >> thanks, martin. >> and we'll be right back. my insurance rates are probably gonna double. but, dad, you've got... to mention is john brennan. john brennan is going to be nominated to head the cia probably today. brennan is very close to the president. i'm told that if there's one person he relies on in the most secret inner debates, it's john brennan who's been his chief counterterrorism and intelligence adviser. john brennan is going to go over to run the cia. in the three branches, he'll have people who were his people. you couldn't say that about gates. he couldn't say that about secretary clinton. and now have that team. and i think that's, again, don't think entirely about the fight ahead. think about what he's trying to accomplish with this group. why he wants them. >> that is the question.brennan goes as planned. what would that mean for the direction of u.s. foreign policy and the president's foreign policy doctrine, and how would it differ from the first four years? >> what that tells you, i think, mika, is this president is serious about completing this process of withdrawal of u.s. troops. kerry and hagel have both spoken very forcefully about ending the combat role in afghanistan. it rein
to worry about the politics. he can put john brennan at the cia and have john kerry at the secretary of state. all reflecting the values of barack obama and obama doctrine that a lot of people expected. >> you also wrote he probably regrets the afghan surge, but he can never say it because soldiers died. >> a lot of us -- the prospects for peace were always bleak. the ability to nation build in a country like that and to be able to raise the number of troops you would have to have in a country like that to be able to put that on the footing is exceedingly difficult. very difficult. there is no alternative economy to copy for a lot of farmers that are there that makes heroin and opium for heroin, that is a very difficult situation for the united states to be in. i think we are starting to see vice president biden's advice where he said they needed to drawdown and do more covert operations and a narrow policy. that's more what you are starting to see. president obama can never say politically that they regretted the surge. they handed off the security to afghanis, but there is note muc

that he needs to answer. >> steve: sure. one of the president's other nominees is john brennan for c.i.a. chief. it's interesting, the president didn't nominate him four years ago because he was probably a little too controversial. what's different now? >> john brennan has a very distinguished career, but i do think he, being part of president bush's administration in regards to the enhanced terrogation techniques, these are issues that during the confirmation process there will be questions that will be asked. i think there are questions he also needs to answer. he has a very distinguished career and we know the president has a great deal of confidence in him. one of the points is that the president is entitled to have his team in place. the senate has an independent responsibility in the confirmation process. so we have a responsibility to ask questions. we want the president to get his team in place. but we do believe it's important that people -- we have the information before we vote on confirmation and make our own judgment as to whether this is the person who should be confirm
nominated so far, you would think john brennan would be the most controversial. he's the one no one is talking about. >> that's right. you can look at all these candidates, hagel and lew, mainstream candidates who represent the president's positions flawlessly, are a stark contrast with the bush administration, therefore the republicans might have beef with him, but that's just not happening. we're being surprised when clearly it's part of a broader strategy to discredit the very idea of government. yes, the polls show that congress is more unpopular than head lice. >> and cockroaches. >> nickelback. >> castro still slightly more unpopular, but i think they can fix that. long term, that's not how people see it. long term, people go government, can't get anything gun. it casts it on the whole enterprise. >> hans, i want to bring you back in this for a second to talk about the ethicacy of a choice of jack lew as head of the treasury department. when we began this fiscal slope, curve, cliff discussion, tim geithner was involved, there was a sense jack lew would be involved. they were m
